Decision-making is an integral part of modern life. Every day, we face situations where we are required to make decisions. Some are easy, like which clothes you will wear today or what you are eating for lunch. However, some decisions demand a deeper level of thinking and consideration, including a career change or how to achieve your next goal in life.
In psychology, decision-making is considered as “the cognitive process resulting in the selection of a belief or a course of action among several possible alternative options, it could be either rational or irrational. Decision-making process is a reasoning process based on assumptions of values, preferences and beliefs of the decision-maker.”
Essentially, our opinions and choices are made by the mental process that researches our biases, emotions and memories. Also, our dreams are based on emotions and beliefs on how we see ourselves in life.
Decision-making can be stressful and requires many skills to clear our thoughts, keeping our mindset focused on evaluating all the possibilities and their consequences before the final decision.
In my own journey in life, I have faced several life-changing decisions, including restarting my life after ending my 37-year marriage, reinvent my business with virtual sessions after Covid-19, defying the odds of my childhood, pursue my dream of helping people, all while thriving to achieve my goals, Going for Gold.

In the past, I was not always able to rationalize and take my time. With more research and understanding of how the decision-making process is crucial, I never went back to the old habit of fast decision and conclusion.
The decision-making process involves a mixture of critical thinking and emotional intuition. This is why the more you narrow your options, the better the process and the outcome can be. Take your time, research, evaluate, think.

- Reasoning: be reasonable with your expectations and how they will impact your life.
Steps to Decision-Making Process
While the decision-making process can be time-consuming and require a lot of time before you settle down, here is a simple step-by-step guide to ease the process and help you think straightforward to define your goals and achieve your dreams.
- Define the situation and what the obstacle is.
- Gather all the information you need before making your final decision.
- Develop and weigh the options, the variables and the possible outcomes.
- Narrow your options to only two.
- Clear your mind and make your decision without involving any emotions.
- Choose your plan and the next steps.
- Take action.
Remember that each step requires patience, time, and no need to rush. A positive outcome is most likely to come when you decide after evaluating and analyzing all your options.
Consistency is vital in the process. Do not give up on the first obstacle. Continue with confidence, and the process will become a habit and a pattern for life.
